Reasons Why Eating Seasonally Is Best For You

It is June and daily temperatures are rapidly rising. With warmer days on the horizon, it is no surprise that we are seeing a greater variety of fruits and vegetables in the produce section.

Why Eat Seasonally?

Not only is seasonal eating fresher and tastier, but it’s also more nutritious! Foods that are in season are packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are thought to be in greater quantities because the food has had time to ripen naturally. Beyond health benefits, however, seasonal eating offers so much more. It benefits the environment, supports the local economy and gives you the ability to know where your food has come from. It’s an all-around favorable experience!

Many cultures put great emphasis on eating seasonally and have specific meals associated with different seasons in the year. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), eating seasonal foods allows for our bodies to remain in balance with our environment; for that reason foods are classified as heating or cooling.

What’s Available for Summer Eating

Now that summer is in full swing, it’s time to take advantage of fruits and vegetables! During this time of year, an abundance of produce is hitting market stands. Not sure what to purchase? Here is a short list of foods in season:

  • Fruits –Apricots, limes, mangoes, oranges, pineapple, honeydew, cherries, cantaloupe, watermelon, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, grapes
  • Vegetables –Artichoke, asparagus, avocado, beans, lettuce greens, carrots, beats, leaks, peas, chard

As stated above, the produce listed is only a small fraction of what’s available this season. To explore more of your options, take a trip to your local produce stand and explore what’s in stock! You might get to try fruits and vegetables you’ve never tasted before, or get to know your local farmers and market workers.

Eating Seasonal for Weight Management

Can eating seasonally benefit your weight management goals? You bet! Fruits and vegetables are an important part of every meal and snack, as they provide rich sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and more. But beyond that, eating seasonally can help with weight management by adding variety to your diet. Variety can help keep things fresh and exciting, which can help you choose healthier foods to add to your plate. When there are plenty of options to choose from, you’re more likely to try what’s available and “spice” things up!
