Hygiene: 5 Things to replace more often than you think

Do you recall the last time you changed your toothbrush? Hygiene is an alluring concept but many don’t always make the connection between the fresh feel of a new pillow and the prevention of infections.

To get started, here are some basic guidelines for common hygiene products.

  • Toothbrush– Are you really trading yours in every three months? Real talk: if your bristles look frayed, it’s time for a new brush.
  • Kitchen sponges– Depending on how often you use them, they should actually be replaced about every two weeks. And make sure to disinfect regularly, no matter how “clean” it feels.
  • Pillows– This may not be obvious, but inexpensive pillows should be replaced every 6 months. If you have memory foam pillows, you should be set for 2-3 years.
  • Loofahs– Literally all the time! Replace yours at least once a month, or else you’re basically just cleaning yourself with bacteria.
  • Mascara– Even fancy mascaras need to be replaced every 2-4 months, especially if you wear contacts.
